“ARTS IS I AND SCIENCE IS WE” a two day international chemistry conference “SCIENTIFIC COLLOQUIUM SPRING-2018”

Department of Chemistry, Government Postgraduate College Jhelum has organized a two day international chemistry conference titled, “SCIENTIFIC COLLOQUIUM SPRING-2018” in collaboration with Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) on 30-31 March 2018 in a small but important city of Jhelum. The focus of the conference was on recent trends in chemistry with particular reference to advanced materials, nanotechnology, renewable energy, classical synthetic techniques, climate and environmental studies.

The conference was attended by a large number of scientists, educationists, research scholars both from country as well as abroad.

The main theme of the conference attracted attention of audience, “ARTS IS I AND SCIENCE IS WE”. Unlike an artist who works in isolation, a scientist always works in team to put collaboration in his/her research work. So scientist community gathered in Jhelum to share their future plans with young scientists and established collaboration among them.

Local MPA Mehr Fayyaz chaired the opening session of the conference and assured complete support to college administration. He has inaugurated ten class rooms for the college from MPA fund. The opening session of the conference was followed by technical session which includes Plenary lectures from eminent scientists including Dr N M Butt (Preston University, Islamabad), Dr. Muhammad Bilal Khan (USP-CASE, NUST, Islamabad), Dr Makshoof Athar (Institute of Chemistry, Punjab University Lahore), Dr Khurram Saleem Joya (KFUPM, Saudi Arabia) and Dr Hammad Cheema (University of Mississippi, USA).

Dr Muhammad Nizamud Din, Chairperson Punjab Higher Education Commission, Lahore joined the scientific community during Lunch and performed formal Inauguration of the conference. After recitation of a few verses of Holy Quran, the chief organizer and organizing secretary of the conference, Dr Shahid Saeed Qureshi welcomed the guest of honor and briefed him about his efforts in organizing this huge task. He thanked all the speakers who travelled from all the universities of country as well as abroad.  He lauded the efforts of the students of department of chemistry in organizing this conference despite lack of sponsorship. Muhammad Nazir Ch, principal of the college welcomed the guest of honor and praised the efforts of organizer to arrange this conference in college.

Dr Muhammad Nizamud Din in his address stressed the need of organizing such events in other cities. He further emphasizes the need of quality research, teaching and collaboration among various institutions to promote scientific culture in the country. He generously praised the organization of this conference in a college. Conference logo was presented to chief guest.

The Colloquium Dinner and Cultural Show was arranged in the college lawn with spectular performances by the students of chemistry department followed by sumptuous dinner.

Second day of conference proceeding started with Plenary Lectures by Dr Zareen Abbas (Gothenburg University, Sweden), Dr Shahid Hameed (Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad) and Dr Irshad Hussain (LUMS, Lahore). This was followed by two parallel sessions where young scientists from various universities and PhD scholars presented their talks on a variety of topics. All the technical and parallel sessions of the two day conference were jam packed and students listened to thought provoking and motivational lectures of speakers. Shields were presented to all the Plenary and invited lecturers.

The closing ceremony of the conference was chaired by Dr Zareen Abbas and eminent scientist Dr Liaquat Ali. They distributed participation certificated to student organizers. Shields were presented to scientific advisory committee members by Dr Qaiser Mehmood, Prof Bahawal Sher, Prof Mehmood Pasha and Prof Arif Gondal.  In his address, Dr Liaquat Ali encouraged students to take keen interest in their studies as well as social work. Dr Zareen Abbas from Sweden guided the young students how to avail international scholarships and encouraged them to apply to his university also. In the end conference secretary Dr Shahid Saeed Qureshi thanked all the participants for gracing the Scientific Colloquium Spring-2018 with their presence for two days in GPGC Jhelum.
