Cllr Luthfur Rahman and the Lord Mayor make a splash at Debdale Outdoor Centre

On Saturday (8 April) the Lord Mayor of Manchester won a ‘Canoe Challenge’ after beating Cllr Luthfur Rahman in the latest sporting encounter between the duo.

The challenge – at Debdale Outdoor Centre – saw the pair receive on-the-water instruction from centre’s qualified staff before being let loose for their head-to-head canoe race.

After the race a good-natured jape saw the competitors capsize each other’s canoes as the pair cooled down in the water following their efforts.

This friendly rivalry continues a series of head-to-head encounters between the duo, who agreed to face off in a number of sporting events including, basketball, taekwondo, squash and cycling over the coming weeks, as part of the city’s drive to encourage more residents to enjoy getting active.

The new website MCRactive.com provides Manchester people with inspiration and opportunities to improve their health and well-being, look for social activities, join local clubs, or become a volunteer.

Executive Member for Culture and Leisure, Councillor Luthfur Rahman, said: “MCRactive.com puts Manchester residents in touch with all the sports, activities and events opportunities happening near them.
