International DJ SIGALA will be joined by a dazzling set of performers, singers and dancers for the annual outdoor party that will officially open the festive season in Manchester.
Albert Square will be the setting for the biggest show in the city as stars of stage and screen come out in force on Saturday, 4 November – topped off by a huge 10-minute firework display.
Following a string of chart success, SIGALA is the first superstar DJ to appear at the Manchester Christmas Lights switch-on event. The “Came Here For Love” hit maker is in high demand and is a rising star on the international DJ scene, with a huge following and millions of views on YouTube.
After working with huge names like Nile Rogers, Sigalas’ most recent track with Ella Eyre stormed the charts earlier this year and the superstar in the making is going to raise the roof at this year’s Christmas Lights show.
Tokio Myers, the multi-instrumentalist who studied at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music, and this year’s winner of Britain’s Got Talent will be this year’s main support act. The virtuoso pianist is used to the big stage, supporting Kanye and Lianne La Havas as a musician in the past – but now it’s his turn!
Fresh from their appearance on the X-Factor last year, the up and coming boy band Yes Lad will fill the heartthrob role at this year’s show before their promising music careers blossom before our very eyes.
The cast of the hit-comedy stage show ELF: The Musical playing at The Lowry will grace our stage, complete with real life reindeer! Buddy the Elf is sure to raise the Christmas spirit with his festive renditions of holiday favourites – starring TV and West End ‘Superstar’ Ben Forster reprising his role as Buddy.
The stars of the city’s theatres will also be out in force with a larger than life (and rather green) appearance from everyone’s favourite ogre. Shrek will appear ahead of his appearance at The Palace Theatre, along with co-star Princess Fiona. And the foot tapping Guys and Dolls will give us all something to dance about fresh from their major production at the Exchange Theatre.
Raising pulses with their acrobatics, Street Dance from The Dancehouse will burst onto stage showing some of their best moves with some of the best choreography the city has to offer.
Opening the show will be the cast of the Little Women production playing at the Hope Mill Theatre in Ancoats, who are bound to melt our hearts before the show even begins with their Christmas renditions!
Key 103’s breakfast host Mike Toolan and Matt Haslam will compere the show with help of Corrie’s Brooke Vincent!!
The Manchester Christmas Light Switch-on is in partnership between Manchester City Council and Key 103.
As always the event is completely free, just get the family together and wrap up warm. The show is an alcohol free event.
Please note, once Albert Square reaches capacity access into the area will be restricted.
A number of road closures will be in place on the evening – full details to be released.
Please note that entry to Manchester’s Switch-On event will be a little different this year and bag searches will be in operation. We advise you to leave your bags at home in order to minimise delays and to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester City Council’s Christmas spokesperson, said: “Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year and we have a show that will open the festive season in real style. We have chart-topping pop stars, the casts from the biggest shows of the season, and incredible dancers and performers. We are in for a real treat.
“Manchester truly is the Christmas capital of the UK and lights switch-on is just the beginning. A week later our world-famous markets open and that’s when we know Christmas has arrived.”
Cllr Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “This is the official start to Christmas in Manchester, so gather all of your family and friends together for the show of the season. We look forward to seeing you there.”
