Greater Manchester Local Authorities, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, the Business Growth Hub and business representatives including the Federation of Small Businesses have been working together to improve the way regulators engage with business. The importance of good regulation is becoming increasingly apparent however food safety, fire safety, trading standards and health and safety legislation can sometimes seem complex and difficult to navigate. Regulators in Greater Manchester have committed to the ‘Better Business for All’ programme and have so far developed two simple offers to business.
The first provides straightforward and concise information on legal requirements for safety and fair trading at the Growth Hub website. Businesses can access this resource and can also contact a growth hub advisor free of charge for more detailed enquiries. Growth Hub advisors have direct links to enforcement officers, should additional support be required.
The second is a new Primary Authority offer: the ‘Greater Manchester Regulatory Centre of Excellence’ (GMRCE). The Primary Authority scheme allows businesses to form a legally recognised partnership with a local authority, which then provides robust and reliable advice for other councils to take into account when carrying out inspections or dealing with non-compliance. Benefits can include greater consistency, increased efficiency, compliance with legal requirements and ultimately savings for business.
The GMRCE combines the expertise of enforcement officers across 10 local authorities and the Fire Service, sharing experience and knowledge and operating on a cost recovery basis to deliver excellent value for money. Further information and case studies are available at:
Councillor Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council executive member for neighbourhoods, said: “Better Business for All is a great new collaboration between the ten Greater Manchester Local Authorities, Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service and the Business Growth Hub to provide a single point of access for advice covering all types of regulatory compliance.
“It is a partnership between businesses and regulators with one key aim – to help businesses get it right the first time and enhance their growth potential.
“Yet another reason to choose Greater Manchester as a great place to do business.”
