Bury-based Street Shakers have won national praise for their work in helping to encourage more women to succeed in sport.
They were shortlisted in the Northern Power Women Awards and, out of 950 nominations, made the final five in the innovation category.
Street Shakers were established on youth work principles and use sport and dance as a tool to engage young people and help their personal development. They offer volunteering opportunities, funded accredited training and qualifications and mentoring to their members, with values based on community empowerment and equality.
They are Bury’s Club of the Year and have been previously recognised by Sport England as the number 1 satellite club in the country out of 7,000.
Street Shakers have helped women in the field of boxing through support from the I Will If You Will initiative, working with Radcliffe Elite Boxing Club. Founder Liz Norris is one of only three female directors at England Boxing, the national governing body.
The Northern Power Women awards were held at the Hilton Hotel Deansgate during International Women’s Week.
