The date of the parliamentary by-election for the Manchester Gorton constituency has been announced as Thursday 4 May.
Voters will go to the polls to elect a new Member of Parliament following the death of the previous MP Sir Gerald Kaufman.
The constituency comprises the Manchester City Council wards of Fallowfield, Gorton North, Gorton South, Levenshulme, Longsight, Rusholme and Whalley Range.
Anyone living in the constituency who is not already registered to vote is encouraged to register as soon as possible.
Applications to register to vote in the Manchester Gorton by-election must be received by Thursday 13 April 2017. Any would would-be voters who are not already on the electoral register are being urged not to delay if they want to have their say. To register, go to www.gov.uk/registertovote. Registering is quick and easy – you’ll need your national insurance number and a few other details to do so.
Anyone who is registered to vote in the constituency can request a postal vote. Completed applications must be received no later than 5pm on Tuesday 18 April.

For electors in the Rusholme ward, there will also be a by-election to elect a new councillor for the area because one of the ward’s three current elected members is stepping down.
Thursday 4 May will also see electors across Greater Manchester go to the polls in an historic vote to choose the first ever Greater Manchester Mayor.
The registration and postal vote deadlines for both these elections are the same as for the Manchester Gorton parliamentary by election.
